Two major milestones were marked in The Swedish Royal House in 2026. On 30th April, His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf - Europe's longest-reigning Monarch - reached his 80th Birthday with a series of festivities surrounding the day. It began with a Te Deum (Thanksgiving Service), continued with tribute by Swedish Armed Forces, children's & public tributes and was culminated by a Gala dinner in The Royal Palace of Stockholm, with Monarchs & Royalty from Europe & Thailand in attendance. The second milestone, The King's & Queen's 50th Wedding anniversary on June 19, fell on the eve of midsummer, one of the main feasts in the Scandinavian calendar. Thus King Carl Gustaf & Queen Silvia, celebrated their Golden Wedding on June 13, with another series of festive events, which included a Te Deum, two public processions in the same Royal Yacht & horsedrawn carriage from their wedding day (reversed) and a gala concert at Stockholm's Royal Opera. Queen Silvia, 82, the German-Brazilian former interpreter & guide to whom ABBA dedicated their new song "Dancing Queen" on The Royal Wedding's eve, also posed for new portraits wearing a traditional Swedish Bunad, on her 50th anniversary as Queen Consort - June 19, 2026.
The Swedish Royal Court first announced about the upcoming celebrations of Their Majesties The King & Queen on January 7. New official portraits of Their Majesties were released and an exhibition at The Royal Palace dedicated to their Golden anniversary was also announced. Carl XVI Gustaf was born on 30 April 1946, during the reign of his great-grandfather, King Gustav V. He was the fifth child of Prince Gustaf Adolf (who died in a plane crash, the year after his birth) & Princess Sibylla, after four sisters, Princesses Margareta, Brigitte, Desiree & Christina. Following the deaths of Brigitta in 2024 & Desiree on January 21, this year, Margareta (92) & Christina (83) are The King's surviving sisters. Carl Gustaf ascended the throne on 15 September 1973, succeeding his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, and married Silvia Sommerlath, who he met during the 1972 Summer Olympics, on 19 June 1976. Their Majesties have three children, Crown Princess Victoria, 49, Prince Carl Philip, 47, & Princess Madeleine, 44, & 9 grandchildren.
King Carl XVI Gustaf's 80th Birthday (30 April 2026)
As The King turned 80, several Monarchs & senior royalty were invited to celebrate his milestone. All Scandinavian Monarchs were in attendance: King Harald V & Queen Sonja of Norway, & retired Queen Margrethe (II) of Denmark (Carl Gustaf's first cousin), joined in few events due to their age & mobility. Denmark's King Frederik X &Queen Mary, Thailand's King Rama X (Vajiralongkorn) &Queen Suthida, Luxembourg's new Grand Duke Guillaume V & Grand Duchess Stephanie & retired Grand Duke Henri were all in attendance, while The King (Philippe) & Queen (Mathilde) of The Belgians, and then-Crown Prince Haakon of Norway joined in the evening for the banquet. Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands (ex-Queen) & Queen Sofia of Spain, also joined the events partially. Princess Benedikte of Denmark, former Crown Prince Alexander & (Crown Princess) Katherine of Yugoslavia, his Hereditary son Prince Peter & Princess Danica, Romania's Custodian of The Crown Margareta & Prince Radu were there too. Other guests in attendance included Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein with her son, Prince Joseph Wenzel, uncle Franz, Duke of Bavaria, 92, and The Prince & Princess of Saxe Coburg & Gotha.
The King's Birthday, 30 April, is a National Flag Day, hence Swedish flags were raised nationwide at 8am. The official program of celebrations began with The Te Deum, a service celebrating important occasions, at 10:00am, at The Royal Palace's Chapel in Stockhom. The whole Royal Family was in attendance, with Their Majesties youngest grandchild, Princess Ines, 1, in the arms of her parents. Following at 11:00am was the Armed Forces' tribute in The Royal Palace's Outer courtyard. The King was joined by his daughter Crown Princess Victoria & son Prince Carl Philip, all in a military uniform, observing the Changing the Guard, Band performances, Royal Salute & flower presentation by children. Shortly after 12:00, The King descended onto the Lejonbacken Terrace, to the sound of a 21-gun salute from Skeppsholmen, and a flyover by The Air Forces. From there, The Royal Family & invited guests enjoyed public performances from Norrbro (The Palace's North Wing) by the Royal Academy of Music.
The music & singing performances ended at about 1:30, while one hour later, The King & Queen rode their Volvo PV60 car (from the year of The King's Birth) to Stockholm's City Hall, for a lunch hosted by The City of Stockholm, with The Royal Family & Official Guests in attendance. The King remarked during the lunch that it felt "very special" and "very much 'at home' " to celebrate his 80th Birthday there, "where we come together each year to celebrate the Nobel Prize laureates". That lunch saw a relaxed reunion of some elderly royal relatives, with the last-known picture of old friends Queen Margrethe & now deceased King Harald V sharing a laughter together captured. A more formal gathering of all guests, was that evening's Gala Dinner in The Royal Palace's State Hall, attended by three generations of The Swedish Royal Family (with Princess Estelle, second-in-line to the throne, attending it for the first time). A joint official photo was taken in the White Sea Ballroom before the banquet.
The foreign Royalty and dignitaries entered the State Hall in specially chosen couples and sat separate from their own ones. The King for instance sat in between The Queens of Norway and Denmark, while The Queen was sitting next to the (late) King of Norway and The King of The Belgians from both sides. All Monarchs and senior Royalty sat at the table of honor in the hall's center, while other dignitaries, representatives of Swedish government, parliament, diplomacy, bysiness, culture, etc, sat to smaller, round tables surrounding the main one. The hall was decorated with garlands on the walls, Swedish provincial flags on the ceiling, floral arangement (of forest & garden) and table settings from the 19th century. During the dinner, which began at 20:00, several speeches & tributes were read, toasts made, three main dishes served & a few singing & choral performances heard. After two hours, The Royal Family & Guests went out to Inner Courtyard for a conclusive Tattoo performance by the Army Band.
The Jubiliant King was the first to deliver his welcoming speech. Carl XVI Gustaf reminiscent of him sitting on the lap of his great-grandfather, King Gustav V, who in turn once sat on the lap of Queen Desiree, Consort of King Karl XIV Johan, Napoleon's former marchal who founded The reigning House of Bernadotte. The King thus reflected his own journey, being now 3 times older than when he became King. During her congratulatory speech to her father, Crown Princess Victoria praised His Majesty's respect & humility to his life's mission of serving Sweden, and its quite example by her both parents. The future Queen linked this example to the next generation, with her daughter, Princess Estelle, 14, watching on. The last royal to deliver a speech was Queen Silvia, King Carl Gustaf's lifelong partner. She thanked her husband for making her feel secure from early on in their joint mission, and reflected on a familiar understanding, always accompanying each other, quoting it as "a we, a then, and a now".
Just over six weeks after The King's Jubilee, The Royal Family and invited guests gathered again in Stockholm to celebrate King Carl XVI Gustaf's & Queen Silvia's Golden Wedding anniversary. Set for Saturday, 13 June 2026, it was the second such occasion for a Swedish Sovereign Couple, after King Oscar II & Queen Sophia's Golden Wedding in 1907. A commemorative medal, featuring the monogram of Their Majesties, was thus created and awarded ti several relatives & royal court servants by The King & Queen's younger children, Prince Carl Philip & Princess Madeleine in the beginning of celebrations. The Te Deum, which opened the day at 11:00am, featured the replay of tunes, performed at The Royal Wedding (in 1976), music by The Royal Court orchestra & other performers, & a wedding prayer also sung again. The Royal Chapel was flanked by guests, including the family of Alexander, former Crown Prince of Yugoslavia, Hisako The Princess Takamado (of Japan) and Princess Benedikte of Denmark.
After the Te Deum, a lunch was hosted in The Royal Palace's Princess Sibylla's apartment. Ahead of it The King & Queen poseed for an official portrait with their children & grandchildren, reflecting their Wedding day portrait with their bridesmaids, almost half a century before. Both pictures were shot in front of one of Queen Christina's "coronation tapestries", painted in the late 1640s in Delft, Holland. All the family was present, apart from Princess Estelle, The Crown Princess & Prince Daniel's elder child, who was away for a lengthy school-trip. The lunch was followed by further celebrations (some streamed live): Lake Procession onboard Vasaorden (at 14:00), Carriage Procession through Stockholm (14:30), Concert at The Royal Gardens (15:00); another Concert at The Royal Opera House (18:00) & a private dinner at the palace (20:00). The latest two were also attended by The (late) King & Queen of Norway, all the royal guests &The King's sisters, Princesses Margareta &Christina (&husband Tord Magnusson).
The King & Queen's two processions were reversed from their wedding day (from Cathedral to Palace). They embarked Royal Yacht Vasaorden after walking from Logarden, down to Skeppsbron. The Yacht was slowly rowed through the Stockholm river, reaching The Royal Djurgarden, where Their Meajesties embarked on the same horse-drawn carriage (used in 1976) and greeted well-wishers during their ride, surrounded by ~2,000 soldiers & 800 scouts along the parade route. Upon their arrival to Royal Garden, The Royal Couple was greeted by family & officials, and watched a concert by The City of Stockholm, featuring popular music hits of the past 50 years & exotic performances, open to the general public. The King & Queen arrived at the Royal Opera House for the Gala Concert in a Daimier Limousine of 1950. They sat at The Royal Box, and were treated for over a hour of performances, from Mendelsson's March to Ballet pieces, Court Orchestra & Opera Choir performances and ABBA songs. Their Majesties went to the scene to greet the performers at the end, before heading to The Royal Palace, where they hosted a private, black-tie banquet in the White Sea Hall, ending their celebrations with food, drink & dancing!
On June 19 (2026), King Carl Gustaf & Queen Silvia became the first Swedish Royal Couple to reach their Golden Wedding milestone since the King's great-great grandparents, Oscar II & Sofia of Nassau. But for The Queen, it was another, special milestone: The once-commoner Silvia Renatte Sommerlath, became the first Queen of Sweden to reach 50 years of consortships. And instead of marking it in a sort of gala dress, or banqueting tiara (having worn the exotic "Brazilian" - Braganza tiarra on her husband's 80th Birthday), the 'dancing Queen' choose a much simpler, and yet poignant, costume from Olandm where The Royal Couple privately marked midsummer, at Solliden. Posing in the part of Drottningholm Palace (outside of Stockholm), the 82-year-old Queen wore a white dress, with red apron and blue waistcoat, alongside a white headscarf, & carried a large bouquet of wildflowers, mostly of blue & yellow, the colours of the Swedish flag. That's how the longest-served Swedish Queen celebrated her milestone.
Exhibitions have also been part of the year-long anniversary commemorations. The Banqueting Hall of The Royal Palace (Stockholm) hosted the exhibition "Gold! Together for Sweden for 50 years", running from May 11 to October 11 (2026) & featuring commemorative photos, lifhting gifts, clothing and other objects from The Royal Wedding of 19 June 1976. The day when the first commoner Queen of Sweden descended the steps of Stockholm's Grand Church, accompanying her 30-year-old Reigning Husband, whose regnal motto, "For Sweden - with the Times" (For Sverige - i tiden) has been more real than ever. Be it the constitutional amendment stripping The King from any constitutional initiatives the year after his accession, the change of marriage rules three years into his reign, or the change of succession laws and the reverse of Crown Princely title from his baby son to his firstborn daughter, back in 1980. The King, who celebrated his Golden Jubilee on The Throne in 2023, and yet is still very passionate about nature, the environment, scouting & racing cars, keeps up with the times even at the age of 80, adapting to everything new easily, with his 'dancing Queen' of 50 years by his side; as "a we, a then, and a now".
