Romania's last Royal Funeral; Queen Mother Elena (1896 - 1982) has been reburied (18 & 19/10/2019)

This month, Romanian royal family hold its final 'funeral' of a significant member. The remains of former Queen Helen - mother of the late last King Michael I - who had lain on a private grave in Lausanne since her death (1982) were transported to her country-by-marriage & re-intered with honours at the family crypt in Curtea de Arges, beside her husband (King Carol II), son & daughter-in-law. The reburial ceremonies lasted for two days, with the former royal family observing 'three days of mourning' & condolence books open at its currently owned residences.

Queen Mother Helen's first grave in Lausanne
The reburial of deceased family members, buried far from the customary burial place was announced in early 2018, soon after the major state funeral of the last King Mihai (1921-2017). The New Archiepiscopal Cathedral in Curtea de Arges, opened from May 2009, was specially prepared as the final resting place for remaining royal family members. Having already the last Royal Couple - Mihai I & 'Queen' Ana (1923-2016) intered here, new graves were prepared for the last King's parents. In March this year, former King Carol II was intered in his grave, 15 years after his remains were transfered back from Portugal & laid in repose unburied. Next came the turn of Queen Mother Elena, who died in Lausanne in 1982 & was buried at local Bois-de-Vaux cemetery without any pomp at the time. The announcement as made in early September, with a full funeral program released a month later.

After a private collection of remains & previous late night service in Switzerland, the coffin of Queen Helen arrived to Otopei airport on Friday, October 18 at 11am local time. It was welcomed by Elena's granddaughter, 'Custodian of The Crown' Princess Margareta (current Head of the Royal House), her husband Prince Radu, sisters Elena & Maria, as well as a delegation of dignitaries & official state representatives.

The casket, drapped by royal standart and preceded by a wooden cross with the script: Elena Regina and her lifespan dates, proceeded from the military airplain that brought her back, under the sound of Chopin's funeral march, and was placed to a prepared catafalque. A short, multi-faith service followed, reminding the late Queen's protection to Jews during WWII, for which she was posthumously awarded with Israel's highest civilian honour.

Flag-drapped casket placed into the funerary hearse in airport
After the service, Queen Mother's remains were transfered by a funerary car to the Elisabetta palace, current official residence of the Royal family, as a symbol of reunification with the country she leaved with her son 71 years ago not to return from exile alive.

From ~12:00 to 12:45 the casket lay in repose at the main 'King's Hall' of the palace. Following a short family prayer dignitaries were coming to pay their respects & sign 'condolence book', including Romania's Patriarch Daniel (at 12:30). General public were allowed only outside, but the ceremony (as all others) were streamed live by national television. Flowers (only white-coloured upon Margareta's request) could be placed by wellwishers at the palace grounds & outside Curtea de Arges' new Cathedral (her burial place to be).

Hearse procession passed the Arch of Triumph in Buchurest
By 12:50 the funeral hearse left Elisabetta palace & began a long route through Romanian towns & villages to Curtea de Arges. It arrived just before 5pm, with the casket being placed in repose to the Old Cathedral (at which nave the first modern Kings & Queens of Romania are intered). Soon, people gathered outside were allowed to enter & worship for their last Queen during monarchy (a Princess of Greece & Denmark by birth), who paid major attention to her son during his minor years & youth, when he had become King in a turbulent period. They were allowed to do so up until 8am of Saturday, 19 October 2019.
Cross scripting ELENA REGINA & her lifespan (1896-1982), during the funeral
That day the main funeral service took place at noon. Current & former members of Romanian royal family were in attendance, as well as the Duke (Queen Helen's nephew) & Duchess of Aosta and the main representative of HRH Charles Prince of Wales (Britain's heir apparent). The service was officiated by a senior congregation of the Orthodox Church of Romania, with a tribute letter of the Patriarch read at the ceremony's closure.

Casket brought by the Guard Brigade
Then the standard-drapped coffin of Queen Mother Elena (who never served as Queen-consort, being married to her husband from 1921 to 1928, before his taking of the throne) was transported by the 30th Mihai Viteazul Guard Brigade towards the New Cathedral. The final procession was accompanied by post service repose prayers from the Old Cathedral, chopin's funeral march from the military band & applaudes by people gathering before the grounds.

Final, pre-burial procession from Old to New Cathedral

Queen Helen was finally laid to rest in private, following a short service from, heard from outside the New Cathedral. Before the Royal family left the Cathedral, an ultimate tribute of 21-gun-salute, Romanian national & royal anthems, and a military fanfare, concluded the ultimate tribute a former Queen could ever receive.

After the internement; Margareta & Radu leave the Cathedral
Margareta & Radu, the remaining legal heads of Royal family, briefly talked to the public, & then led other members in bowing to the guards as gratitude to the state for helping them conclude this long-desired act successfully. It meant a lot for them & their royal heritage's preservation to have all of their ancestors properly intered together. Apart from their increased popularity & influence to the current state affairs, 'reuniting' their deceased members in eternity had an important symbolic meaning, emotionally close to them.

ROYAL WEDDING (& BIRTH) IN (DUBAI,) UAE - Thursday 19/09/2019, Thursday 26/09/2019(?) & Saturday 28/09/2019

UAE Rulers celebrate Sheikha Maryam II's royal wedding
The Royal family of Dubai had plenty of celebrations to enjoy last month! On September 19 (a month ago) a daughter of The Emir (, Vice President & Prime Minister of UAE) Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum got married into Al-Nahyan dynasty (of Abu Dhabi), with the bride's family wedding reception held nine days later. Meanwhile, another daughter gave birth to a baby girl on September 26, making the Ruler a proud grandfather (once again)!

Sheikha Latifa (II) bint Mohammed Al-Maktoum
Let's take it all in good order. As it is common in Arab dynasties, Sheikh Mohammed is a polygamous billionaire with thirty children from six wives. The older of them are in their thirties, & younger are aged 11 & 7 (their mother, Princess Haya of Jordan, escaped with them recently to the UK seeking their safety & proceeds in court against her husband). Following the strict sunni tradition, the Emir's daughters are obliged to be married (not always according to their will) & given the strong tie between fellow ruling dynasties in UAE (& Gulf monarchies beyond), dynastic marriages are usual. And unlike some exceptions (eg Sheikha Latifa, who tried to escape last year seeking freedom, but was forced to return back & remained under her father's strict custody for a long time), usually Mohammed's daughters are usually obeying & their marriages to royals from fellow emirates are large celebrations among Rulers.

So, let's see these celebrations now!

Sheikha Maryam II bint Mohammed Al Maktoum, 27, is a daughter of Sheikh Mohammed with his senior wife, Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al-Maktoum (also Dubai's First Lady). With her future husband, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Hamdan Al-Nahyan she has been engaged since August 24, 2018. The groom is a graduate of British Royal (military) Academy Sandhurst & received the Major General Diwan Misri Chad Platoon Award "for demonstrating outstanding innovation & purpose during the training course". Last month, their turn to marry had come.

Sheikh Mohammed congratulating his daughter on her marriage
As it's customary, their marriage was valid following the joint signing of common contract (Al-Akhd ceremony) in front of a high court, or an imam, or a Sheikh, which took place on Thursday, September 19 (2019). Royal relatives of Sheikha Maryam joined immediately in congratulations (through social media accounts) & thus the happy event, firstly restricted to privacy, became widely known. Then it was the turn of "henna night" for the bride & groom, which may have been held in private. In the meantime, invitations for the wedding reception were being sent.

Invitation to the wedding reception (with a halwa dish inside)
Just two days before the arranged festivity, another happy occurence came for the 70-year-old influential Emir. Another of his daughters (this time from a Lebanese wife, Sheikha Delila Aloula), 32-year-old Sheikha Maryam bint Mohammed Al-Maktoum (the first of his three daughters, sharing this name), gave birth to a baby daughter, named Sheikha Fatema bint Suhail Al-Maktoum. Maryam I has been married to Sheikh Suhail bin Ahmed Al-Maktoum (a relative from the same dynasty) since January 3, 2018.

With highly-lifted spirits & in a celebratory atmosphere, Sheikh Mohammed hosted the wedding reception (for male relatives of the bride) on Saturday, September 28, at the Dubai World Trade Centre. It is the same venue, the grand royal wedding reception for three of his sons (including the Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed) to brides from Al-Maktoum dynasty was held last June 6. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from UAE, Rulers of fellow Fujairah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain & Ras Al-Khaimah Emirates, Crown Princess & many other royals. According to the custom, it included ayala performance by dancing troope with swords & traditional Emirati music as well.

The celebrations from the bride's male relatives were deeply enjoyed, regardless that the bride herself wasn't even shown taking part at all!

Jacques Chirac (1932 - 2019): Death & Funeral of former CO-PRINCE OF ANDORRA

A former European monarch passed away last month. HE Jacques Rene Chirac, who in his capacity as President of France reigned also as ex-officio Co-Prince of Andorra (1995-2007), Died on Thursday 26 September 2019 aged 86, after a long period of illness.

late Jacques Chirac (1932-2019) with Marc Forné (left)
As a long-serving French politician he had left a mixed legacy in his country of origin, though in the fellow Pyreneean Principality the deceased was of quite positive remembrance comparative to his predecessors. Marc Forné, former excecutive Head of the government of Andorra, coinciding with Chirac's presidential term, paid tribute to his former fellow & counterpart, emphasising his visit to the Principality shortly into his term & willing to stay there overnight, unlike any of his predecessors. Forné also mentioned Chirac's efforts to balance between his two head of state' titles, receiving himself ambassadors to Andorra & in return, opening an embassy of Andorra (at the Andorra Plaza) in Paris.

Chirac in Andorra early on his term (late 1990s)
Following his death, Andorran government announced three days of national mourning (from September 27 to 29). The Head of the government, Xavier Espot, sent a letter of condolences to Chirac's family, emphasizing his respect to the former head of state for 12 years. Books of condolence opened as well at the Andorran government Administration building (ground floor) from Friday (September 27), from 9am to 3pm. Andorra's ministry of foreign affairs also extended condolences to the French Embassy of Andorra on behalf of the country.

Jacques Chirac's state funeral took place on Monday, September 30, designated by incumbent President Emmanuel Macron as a Day of national mourning in France. The former Head of state received the highest-level posthumous tributes, with his flag-drapped coffin lying in state at the Invalides monument (of national heroes) for one day, before a military tribute at the Invalides' grounds, the official mass of remembrance at St.-Sulpice Church - attended by dozens of global leaders, but not his ailing wife, Bernadette (86) - & a family burial in strict privacy at the Montparnasse cemetery (in Paris).

Andorra was of cource represented at the funeral service with all of its renior official leaders. Arch. Joan Enric Vives Sicilia (current Episcopal Co-Prince, who began his tenure in 2003 during Chirac's office), government leader Xavier Epsot & Parliament Speaker, Mrs. Roser Suñé Pascuet all attended. Given the presence of all living former French Presidents (/ Co-Princes), it was an ocassion, attended by All of the living Sovereigns of this dual monarchy (Vives Sicilia has not any predecessor alive). Additionally, with both Pres. Valery Giscard d'Estaing (93) & Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani - Emir of Qatar - (39) in attendance, it was the only yet concurrence, which saw the oldest & youngest currently living Sovereign together.

SULTAN MUHAMMAD V of Kelantan AT 50 - His marriage, my version

HRH Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, former King of Malaysia turns 50 today. His official birthday was scheduled for November 11 in his Sultanate (& September 9 while still the Head of State, before his surprising move to step down last January, which make history in his country). However, the death of his father, Sultan Ismail Petra just over a week ago, aged 69, plounged the royal family into 100 days of mourning & supposelly cancelled the November celebrations (when the deceased would have turned 70).

Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan

It was nine years ago, back in September 2010, when the Succession Council of Kelantan - one of the most conservative states in North-Eastern, Peninsular Malaysia - proclaimed him the monarch, against his father's will. Sultan Ismail, the absolute monarch from 1979, had suffered a stroke in May 2009, which sent him for treatment in Singapore & made then Tengku Mahkota (Crown Prince) Muhammad Faris Petra the rightful regent during the Ruler's absence first & then due to his incapacity. After more than a year of royal uncertainty, the 39-year-old Regent was decided to replace his 60-year-old father as the Sultan, after the latter was deemed incapacitated to because of his poor health. The succession occured on September 13 (2010), though former Sultan never accepted it & challenged the Council's decision as unconstitutional via the Federal Court, but lost to its judgment.

Ailing Sultan Ismail Petra with his wife Tengku Anis (left)

As the rightful 29th Sultan of Kelantan, Faris, who took the regnal name: Muhammad V, become equivalent to the eight other Malay Rulers, eligible to the office of Head of State, which has been rotated every five years between them (starting by an order of seniority) since Malaysia's Independence. Thus in 2011, Sultan Muhammad V was selected as Deputy King & then in 2016 came his turn to serve as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia (office equivalent to a King's). His reign began in December 2016, with his Installation (customary enthronement) taking place in April 2017. It was scheduled to last until December 2021, and was particularly noted as the first one without a Raja Permaisuri Agong ('Queen' Consort). The King had been a divorse since 2008.

YDP Agong Sultan Muhammad V
marrying Miss Moscow 2015, Oksana Voevodina
In late November 2018, Malaysians were surprised & amazed when photos of their King marrying a young Russian model made headlines in foreign press. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong was at the time on a two-month "medical leave", and neither Kelantanese Royal Palace, nor the State Palace in capital Kuala Lumpur confirmed or denied these rumours. According to then reports, Muhammad V, 49, married to Oksana Voevodina (/Gorbatenko), 25, a former Miss Moscow (2015) beauty pageant winner, who had converted to Islam in April (2018), taking the name Rihanna. The glittering ceremony took place in Russia on Thursday, November 22, 2018, with both sides' traditions preserved (& no alcohol, just halal food served). Some of Malaysians warmly accepted their King's marriage, with even some sources reporting her as their new Queen (& future Raja Perempuan/Royal Consort of Kelantan). Though no announcement still came from the palaces. Meanwhile reports emerged that the King's wife is treated in a German fertility clinic, expecting the couple's first child.

Then the "shock" came after a lot of speculation. Sultan Muhammad V stepped down as Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, just few days after his return from leave at the beginning of 2019. Muhammad V became the first sovereign monarch in modern Malaysian history to cut short his five-year-reign via Abdication. The announcement was announced on Sunday, January 6 the day of Tengku Anis Tengku Abdul Hamid (The King's mother's) 70th birthday. It was of immediate effect.

Tengku Anis came from the royal family of fellow Sultanate of Terengganu. She had married Ismail Petra (then Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan) in 1968 & 1969 (two ceremonies) & was the legal Royal Consort (Raja Perempuan) of Kelantan even after her husband's deposition. She was reportedly a strict mother (while upbringing her four children) & took 'special care' of her husband following his condition deteriorated. I would say that it is not strange that 'Sultan Ismail filled' through his lawyers to an irrevocable divorse (talak tiga) from his second wife in 2010, while recuperating from his stroke. At least, Tengku Anis evidently supported her husband's position while claiming their son's enthronement illegal & previously, when Faris as Regent had outsted his youngest brother Muhammad Fakhry Petra from the succession council, where the latter had been appointed by Sultan Ismail. The last time Sultan Muhammad V was shown with his mother before his abdication, was at the beginning of his reign as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, when the King was departing for capital to take his oath of office. He paid her his respects, shook her hand & received her blessings, with no kisses exchanged between mother and son.

Muhammad V paying respects to his mother on his first day as King

Tengku Anis & Sultan Ismail reached their Golden wedding anniversary just weeks after Sultan Muhammad's reported marriage. The reaction of the King's father (who was either in & out of hospital, or convinced to a wheelchair at the time) couldn't be known. But a pressure from his powerful mother (on Ismail's behalf) was very possible. In addition, speculations reached the other Malay Royal Households. An extraordinary meeting of the Royal Council (consisted of Malay monarchs or regents) took place for an undisclosed matter (& in absolute privacy) just days before the abdication. It's concurrence with Tengku Anis' milestone could have been more than just that...

Faiz's wedding to Cik Sofie Louise Johansson on April 19
Some months passed without news from 'the pair'. Sultan Muhammad V made rare appearances & was often replaced by his younger brother Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra (who served as regent during his YDP Agong's term). Faiz's wedding last April to Swedish Sofie Louise Johansson was recognised & attended by his parents & royal family, but notably missed by the Sultan. From Rihanna no certain news were published, but pictures showing her dressed in bikini & having sex in pool with a collegue for a reality show had been circling in the internet from the very moment her popularity rose. Eventually, Oksana came to the headlines again, when she created her Instagram account, with the name Rihanna Petra (adopting her husband's family name). There she revealed more photos from the wedding in Russia, as well as the unknown first marriage ceremony in Malaysia, on June 7, 2018. Furthermore she proudly announced the birth of their son & future heir to the throne: Tengku Ismail Leon Petra Bin Sultan Muhammad V Faris Petra, who arrived on Wednesday May 21 (2019).

Throughout June & early July Rihanna continued to share about her experience of maternity & love story with her husband, whom she reportedly met in Spring 2017 & they fell in love with each other quickly. At first no official respond was given by any Malay sources. However, it was apparent that there wasn't a common photo of Sultan Muhammad & his son as well as that at all photos of the baby boy his facial details were occurately hidden. In ~ the middle of July Malaysian media begin claiming their separation & divorse, citing on reliable sources, close to the Sultan's palace, while on July 20 it was confirmed that Muhammad V had irrevocably divorsed Voevodina by talak tiga on June 22. An official certificate of divorse (signed in Singapore on July 1) was made public as well. Oksana did not confirm anything, while her lawyers & sources close to her family had been denying it, despite the documents stated that she had been informed. Nothing more was by then disclosed, with some sources close to Muhammad claimed that his paternity of the child was not evident at all. They also claimed that she was still living in a luxury residence he provided her, demanding still his economic contribution.

When divorse was confirmed, Rihanna Petra (who turned 27 on July 10) at first avoided detailed publications, then defended herself & her son from the attacks she received from "yellow media", still siting loyalty to her husband (who wouldn't allow it "as a decent Muslim"); finally at the beginning of September she published that she's ready to reveal the "painful truth" about their relationship. She started with her first trip to Malaysia, when Muhammad prayed in front of her (promising to teach her 'everything about Islam'). At the time she also revealed that she saw from the very beginning the father of her children in his face; Muhammad meanwhile had told her that all women used him for money & didn't produce him a child (which was the 'biggest dream of his life'). Oksana as well reported that he told her about his previous marriage to a Czesh woman, whom he had divorsed in 2015, something that haven't been officially reported as well.

Sultan Muhammad V & Tengku Faiz Petra (right)
Soon afterwards, a representative from the Kelantan palace' responded on behalf of the Sultan, condemning social media sources & the inappropriate usage of titles without any statement by the official royal source. He told of these sources as lies & defamatory for the state's royalty, urging the people not to be confused by them & follow only to verifyable sources (& relay to the proper usage of royal titles). He added as well that the Sultan regrets over some past choices that may have associated him & his family with slander & hopes people to pray for the wellbeing of his ailing father "whom he loves dearly". Oksana was to temporary stop her posts once again. Sultan Muhammad V (who had begun to appear at customary prayers & ceremonies, related to muslim feasts) was to stop being the same permanently. His 'dear father' Sultan Ismail Petra, whom he himself had deposed, but who outlived the most significant part of his son's reigns (over the past decades), was to die on Saturday, September 28 (2019), less than two months before being 70 on November 11 (which would have also been the official celebration of his son's 50th birthday). Out of respect these all are now cancelled.
Almarhum Sultan Ismail Petra (1949 - 2019)

Oksana made her last post about the topic on October 3, from an interview she gave on a TV Channel on September 27. She told that Muhammad V had left her from December 2018, with no contact with him & his relatives possible. She wished him to think about his responsibility towards 'their son' (about whom she was very enthusiastic), but denied the need of any DNA' test citing his birth as planed & desired. Muhammad V of course didn't made further statement.
