Last Tuesday, April 16, 2019, Princess Reema bint Bandar Al-Saud was sworn in as the 11th Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the United States. Princess Reema was appointed to that position last February 23, becoming the first female ambassador from KSA.
The appointment was announced in a royal degree by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (who was then acting King). Wednesday's oath-taking ceremony was held at Al-Yamamah palace in Riyadh, in front of the King (& Princess' great-uncle), Salman bin Abdulaziz.
Her Royal Highness swore in the name of Allah Almighty, to serve her religion, King & country faithfully; never to reveal state secrets, preserve her country's interests, and perform her duties with sincerity, honesty & loyalty.
The ceremony was held in presence of other senior Saudi diplomats, with Reema's brother, Khaled bin Bandar (former Ambassador to Germany) being also sworn-in as KSA's Ambassador to the United Kingdom.
The following day (Wednesday, April 17), Reema bint Bandar expressed her gratitude to The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques (King Salman) & the Crown Prince (Muhammad bin Salman) for the honor of being appointed to this position in a 'historic-first'.
She pledged to do her best for the strengthening their nations' bilateral relations, pursuing the kingdom's further development & continuing the partnership with the US "to ensure the success of this transformation".
Reema also reaffirmed her loyalty to the King & her homeland.
Princess Reema's father, Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud was himself the kingdom's Ambassador to USA for 22 years (1983-2005). He is a close friend of former President George W. Bush.
Through both of her grandfathers, she is a great-granddaughter of KSA's founder & first monarch, King Abdulaziz (/Ibn Saud).
The Princess, born in 1975, spent many years living in the United states due to her father's position, and thus graduated from George Washington University (Washington, D.C.), with a Bachelor Degree in museum studies.
Since her return to Saudi Arabia, and over the past decade, Reema bint Bandar developed her activity in both private & public sector.
She established her portfolio in business activity, serving as the Chief Executive Officer in an international luxury retail company.
In social sphere, Princess Reema played a leading role for women's education, physical development, & health. In a kingdom where gender inequality is still legally supported she tried to pursue women's emancipation and involvement to a more active lifestyle.
Among the initiatives she founded or supported are: the Al Khair social enterprise (professionally guiding women through a structured curriculum), Mass Participation Federation, Saudi National Creative initiative (advisory body), General Sports Authority (governmental body, developing 'physical fitness space'), World Economic Forum, & 'Zahra' Breast Cancer Assossiation.
Recently HRH was concidered as one of 200 most powerful Arab women and is a recepient of numerous awards for her creative role.
HRH Princess Reema bint Bandar was married to her second cousin, Prince Faisal bin Turki bin Nasser (b. 1973) & has two children with him. They were involved in a bribery scandal, after a UK' defence firm (BAE systems) illegally founded their honeymoon trip (in 2007) with £250 000. They divorsed in 2012.
Princess Reema succeeds King Salman's son, Khaled bin Salman, who left the Ambassador's office in February to become deputy Defence Minister. In a critical time, when her country is the subject of international condemnation, due to the ongoing Yemen War & the suspicious murder of journalist Khashoggi (last October), Her Royal Highness is called to sustain the oil-rich kingdom's diplomatic relations with USA, the first Saudi woman, going for this!
