ROYAL WEDDING IN UK (THE SECOND FOR 2018).

This month is a special one for the British Royal family, as last Friday, October 12, they gathered at Windsor Castle to celebrate another Royal wedding (after that of Prince Harry in May). Princess Eugenie of York, a granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, tied the knot with her fiance, Jack Brookabank, following a relationship of eight years. The ceremony, starting at 11am (BST), was attended by 850 guests, including many celebrities, like Robbie Williams, Demi Moore, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, while the famous Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performed two soli, accompanied by the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra. The service was officiated by the Dean of Windsor, while the Archbishop of York read a personal prayer he wrote for the couple. After it was concluded (just before noon) the newlyweds drove the way out of the Castle & through some town streets in a horse-drawn Scottish State Coach, before continuing the family celebrations with a private family reception, hosted by the Queen and a black-tie dinner later that evening (at Royal Lodge), hosted by the bride's father. Let's find out more about the bride & groom!!

Eugenie was born on 23 March 1990, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York (second son of the Queen) and his former wife, Sarah Fergusson, and the younger sister of Princess Beatrice of York. Currently she is the ninth in line to inherit the British throne. At the age of 12, she underewent a back surgery to correct scoliosis. She lives ever since with metal rods in her back & subsequently has become a patron of Royal National Orthopaedic hospital. She has a degree in English literature & art history and now is an associate director at a contemporary art gallery in London. The princess also sometimes makes public apperances, completing her royal obligations (the official engagements), though she is not a full-time working royal, so her security is not payed by public money. Additionally she supports some charities, related with osteopathy, teenage cancer, anti-slavery campaign and elephants protection.

Jack, 32, is a wine merchant, brand ambassador for Casamigos Tequila, and socialite. His parents are George Brooksbank (a company director and chartered accountant) & his wife Nicola (née Newton), and he is descended of british baronets. He & Eugenie are distant cousins through a common ancestor. Both his father and younger brother went to the Eton College in Berkshire, Windsor. After his studies Jack first worked in hospitality and management at establishments like some popular clubs & pubs. He met Princess Eugenie while on ski holidays in Verbier, Switzerland. Their mutual love has been described as one that begun "at first sight". They were dating for ~seven years before he proposed her, while on holiday in Nicaragua, at the beginning of this year. And here comes the time everything was made public!

On January 22, Buckingham palace announced their engagement. Jack Proposed to Eugenie with a ring made of Padparadscha sapphire (similar to her mother's). Soon after the initial announcement the Duke of York confirmed that their wedding would take place at St. George's Chapel (Windsor Castle), on October 12. The venue, which hosted many royal ceremonies over the last 5 centuries, was reportedly suggested by the Queen. It has been very popular for weddings of non-major royals (not in front-line of succession, younger children & grandchildren of the monarch, etc), and also is the burial place of previous Kings & Queens. It was to host (on May 19) the wedding of Eugenie's very popular cousin Prince Harry & Meghan Markle (now Dukes of Sussex), so this would be the second royal wedding held here in 2018. As Princess Eugenie is a campaigner of battle against plastic polution special preparations were also made for a plastic-free ceremony.
Any controversy about this wedding?

Yes, this ocassion didn't escape criticism. What draw a central attention was the cost of the wedding. Though it wasn't considered as a state affair, measures were taken for police protection of the high profile guests, as well as street security for the carriage procession outside Windsor castle - which alone is estimated to cost ~£2 million. The bill is covered by the police and some local councils, all parts of public sector, so the vast amount of money is to come from the taxpayer's pocket (although there is a possibility for government reimbursement). Critics suggested Eugenie, as a minor royal, should have had her wedding as a private affair, with the royal family paying all the cost. Republic, an anti-monarchist organisation urged the government not to commit public money for this event, through a petition, receiving ~50,000 signatures. While the service, decoration and other private aspects were funded by royalty, there are still speculations that public policing during the wedding might have costed a lot to the taxpayers.

As the date came closer, more details were revealed. Princess Eugenie choose to 'follow the example' of her cousin, Prince Harry, inviting 1,200 people from across the UK into the Grounds of Windsor Castle, "to share the experience of the special day". They were chosen from the applications sent by ~100,000 interesting, with personal invitations extended a month before the wedding. Among them were representatives from charities of the princess' patronage. In the days leading to the wedding the bridal party was revealed. Six bridesmaids & two pageboys, all of them children would have "the task" to accompany the bride. They included most of the Queen's great-grandchildren (among them Prince George & Princess Charlotte of Cambridge), Eugenie's goddaughter, Robbie Williams' daughter, & a great-nephew of the late French designer Hubert de Givenchy. The bride's first cousins, Lady Louise Windsor & James, Viscount Severn, were the special attendants. As it was expected, Eugenie's sister Princess Beatrice was confirmed as maid of honour, while Jack's brother, James, was announced as the groom's best man. While BBC announced that it wouldn't make a live coverage of the ceremony, the wedding was streamed live in the UK through ITV morning channel, the media channels of the Royal family & Duke of York's official websites, as well as in special brosdcasts in Canada & Australia.

And although many extended relatives of the House of Windsor (the current royal family), not all of senior royals were finally present. The absence of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall (wife of Charles, Prince of Wales), due to pre-arranged engagements that day was widely reported with speculation about her relationship with the York family, even though an official source denied any tentions. Also not all of the Queen's royal cousins were present, mostly due to old age or health-related issues. It was not known until the last moment, whether Eugenie's grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (the 97-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II), retired since last year, would attend the wedding. Old rumors emerged about tentions with his former daughter in law (Sarah, Duchess of York). Finally he decided to go. Except the British royals, there were also few members of other European royal families in attendance, like Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece (with his wife & daughter; pictured here) and members of the House of Hanover as well (both royal families are closely related with the British House of Windsor).

And here... we come back to the wedding day!!!

Friday October 12 2018... 3000 well-wishers gathered across the streets. Floral decorations of autumnal theme (with flowers from Windsor Great Park). A day of windy weather with ladies struggling not to let their hats be flown away, and some of the bridesmaids trying to keep their balance while entering the Chapel. The most popuar royals, especially the Dukes of Cambridge & Sussex and the Queen were cheered upon their arrival. The bride was escorted down the aisle by her father. She wore an open back full-train wedding dress, designed by Peter Pilotto & Christopher de Vos, without any veil, revealing the scar of her scoliosis surgery back 16 years ago. She also wore the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, made in 1919 & handed to her grandmother in 1942. Marriage vows... a wedding ring (made of welsh gold) for the bride... performances of hymns, opera, readings (including by Princess Beatrice), prayers... signing of marriage register... singing of the national anthem... a double kiss outside the church... fanfare & pipe performance by the royal regiment of Scotland... coach procession... wedding reception... departure in a silver Aston Martin DB10 (made for James Bond' movie Spectre)... & a second reception... that's all!

Official photographs by Alex Bramall (included above) were released the next day. Two of them (family ones,) were  taken at the Windsor Castle following the ceremony, the third inside the Scottish State Coach, while the third at the Royal Lodge, during the final (black-tie) reception. After her wedding, Princess Eugenie didn't receive any title, but dropped the designation "of York" from her previous one (and now can use the alternative Mrs. Brooksbank). She will remain a member of the Royal family, continuing her everyday life & few public appearances, though Jack Brooksbank will not receive any additional title, having just the priviledge of being the Duke of York's son in law. It is not yet known whether or when Eugenie & Jack will leave for their honeymoon, but now, after an elegant wedding & lavish celebrations at the end of the week, they are "coming in terms" with the new chapter they opened in their lives, while beginning together a new & (hopefully) happy family life!.
