Thailand's Longest-reigned Consort: Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother (1932 - 2025)

The death of HM, Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother of Thailand, was announced by The Thai Royal Household Bureau in the early hours of Saturday, October 25, 2025. It revealed that Her Majesty passed away at 9:21'pm (UTC+7) on Friday, 24 October 2025, aged 93, after deteriorating following a bloodstream infection (sepsis), despite the best efforts by the doctors. The Queen Mother had been treated at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital from 7 September 2019. The passing of 'The Mother of The Nation', The Royal Matriarch and oldest senior member of The Thai Royal Family triggered profound grief for her family and nation. HM King Vajiralongkorn directed a Royal Funeral in full honour set for his late Mother. He decreed a year of mourning for the world's longest-served Queen Consort to be observed by The Royal Family & Staff of The Royal Household. The Government declared a year-long mourning for public servants, and requested from the general public to dress appropriately for 90 days, while flags flew at half-mast for 30 days. The Royal Funeral began Sunday, 26 October, and will be completed with Queen Sirikit's elaborate cremation, one year after her death.

Honourable Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara was born on 12 August 1932, the third child & older daughter of Prince Nakkhatra Mangala, 2nd Prince of Chanthaburi and Mom Luang Bua Snidvongse. Through her father she was a great-granddaughter of King Chulalongkorn (1853 - 1910), who during his reign as Rama V (1868-1910) abolished slavery and modernized future Thailand. Born in the year Siam transcended into a constitutional monarchy, she grew up with her grandparents while her father was placed to the Siamese Embassy in Washington, DC. On the outbreak of the Pacific War she left Kindergarten at Rajini School and studied at Saint Francis Xavier School in Bangkok, close to the Palace to be safe from bombings. At the end of the War, Sirikit had completed her secondary education and joined her family in London where Prince Nakkhatra Mangala became an ambassador to the Court of St. James'. There she had the chance to learn the piano as well as French & English languages and become affiliated to the Western culture and art. As her father was a diplomat, Sirikit's family frequently moved to different capitals in Europe on his change of placement.

In 1948 the family met with the young King, Bhumibol Adulyadej, for the first time in Paris. Sirikit accompanied him to French tourist attractions and they found matching interests. He was hospitalized after a serious car accident in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Sirikit visited him with her mother & younger sister. As the 21-year-old King began courtship with his teen first-cousin-once-removed, his Mother, Princess Sri Sangwal asked Sirikit to continue her studies in Lausanne, where she studied languages, arts, music, literature and history. The young couple were engaged on 19 July 1949 and she accompanied the King at The Cremation of his brother, King Rama VIII in March 1950. They married at Sra Pathum Palace on 28 April 1950, witnessed by Queen Grandmother Savang Vadhana. On The Coronation of Bhumibol as Rama IX (5 May 1950) Sirikit was formally proclaimed as Queen Consort and received The Order of The Royal House of Chakri. Following their marriage The King & Queen continued their studies in Switzerland, only returning in 1952. On 20 September 1956 Queen Sirikit was sworn in as Regent of Thailand in front of The converted House of Representatives at Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall. She served as "Queen Regent" with distinction from October 22 until November 5, 1956, during The King's monkhood ordination, and received the title of "Somdet Phra Nang Chao Sirikit Phra Borommarachininat" on her husband's birthday, December 5 (1956).

Queen Sirikit joined King Rama IX on frequent visits to the Thai remote provinces to oversee various community development process and ensure their subjects' social wellfare. Sirikit was particularly passionate about preserving Thai cultural identity and silk clothes & handicrafts production, which was on the verge to disappear. She launched The SUPPORT Foundation, which promoted this local art worldwide, as well as campaigned for sustainable development and flora & fauna preservation. Her adherence to traditional arts can be summarized in the revival of Khon majestic masked dance - drama (recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018), while her namesake Museum of Textiles still displays the numerous fashion outfits she wore as the most photogenic stylish Queen in her youth. The King & Queen were considered as 'Father' and 'Mother' of the nation and Queen Sirikit's Birthday has been celebrated as National Mother's Day of Thailand since 1976. Her Majesty affected major decisions behind the scenes, influencing her only son, Crown Prince (now King) Maha Vajiralongkorn's first two marriages and certain actions of her Sovereign husband. Her paying respects to a royalist victim of police clashes in 2008 showed her affiliation to a certain faction.

Queen Sirikit was hospitalized in Siriraj hospital following a serious ischemic stroke in July 2012, after which she ceased her public appearances. King Bhumibol Adulyadej died in October 2016 after years of failing health, having been on the throne for 70 years. Her Majesty, by then discharged from the hospital but increasingly senile, attended private services, but not his public State Funeral and Cremation in 2017. On the Coronation of her son Vajiralongkorn as King Rama X, Sirikit received the title of Queen Mother on 5 May 2019. On 7 September she was hospitalized again at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, where she would be treated for various age-related conditions for the rest of her life, receiving annual visits by her family on her bithday. Photos of The Queen Mother taking part in merit-making ceremonies during thise visits at the hospital's Bhumisiri Mangalanurosn building were published in 2020 and 2022. In her last photos released in 2023, Sirikit looked frail, her connection with the world limited. She died on Friday, 24 October 2025, aged 93, after developing a bloodstream infection on October 17, having reportedly been unconscious for about three months.

The longest-reigned Queen Consort in Thai & global history, and oldest-living member of the senior Thai Royal Family, she is survived by four children (Princess Ubolratana, 74, King Vajiralongkorn, 73, Princess Royal Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, 70 and Princess Chulabhorn, 68), 11 grandchildren (a grandson predeceased her & a granddaughter, Princess Bajrakitiyabha, has been on artificial life support since December 2022) & 9 great-grandchildren. Following the demise of his mother, The King decreed a year of Royal Mourning to be observed by The Royal Family and members of The Thai Royal Court. The Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul declared a 30-day period of national mourning, during which flags will be lowered to half-mast, entertainment-events will be cancelled or adjusted, and the public has been advised to wear black clothes or avoid flashing clothing in public for 90 days. Members of the government were also told to observe one year of official mourning. Queen Mother Sirikit was also the second longest-lived Thai Queen Consort after Savang Vadhana and second Queen Regent of Thailand after Queen Saovabha Phongsri of Siam (wives of King Rama V).

On Sunday, 26 October (2025), crowds of Thai people gathered across the streets to watch the Funeral Procession of Her late Majesty's Royal body, which had been scheduled for 16:00'. They wore black, mourning clothes and hold portraits of the late Queen Sirikit & her husband, King Bhumibol Adulyadej 'The Great'. Ahead of the bathing rites (arranged for 17:00' at The Grand Palace), the general public was granted The King's permission to symbolically pour water for the bathing rite & pay their respects to The Queen Mother's portrait at Saha Thai Samakon Hall in The Grand Palace's Compound from 8am to 12pm on Sunday. The time was reportedly extended to 16:00. Members of the public were assisted by The Staff - wearing black armbands on their white uniforms - in approaching the altar, pouring the water & procrastinating before The Royal Portrait. The King & Queen, accompanied by The (King's) Royal Noble Consort & (daughter) Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana left at 15:42 from Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall of Dusit Palace, proceeding to the 29th floor of Chulalongkorn hospital to accompany the mortal remains of the late Queen Mother.

The Royal Family entered the Bhumisiri Mangalanusorn Building and paid their respects. The Chief of the Dhammaksa Monastic Division (Somdet Phra Maha Veerawong) and the Assistant Abbot of Wat Ratchabophit (Temple) led the procession of the Royal Coffin to the gray 2001 Volkswagen Caravelle T4, registration mumber 1D-0929 Bangkok - the famous "James Bond" vehicle. Widely used by the late King & Queen, it had also transported the Royal Coffin of King Bhumibol Adulyadej 'The Great' from Siriraj Hospital to The Grand Palace after his passing, in October 2016. The Funeral Procession, led by the car of Somdet Phra Maha Veerawong, followed by The James Bond Vehicle and then by The Royal Cars of The King & Queen and other members of The Royal Family, left Chulalongkorn Hospital at 4:26'pm. It proceeded along a 10-kilometer-route, through Henri Dunant Road, Rama IV Road, Phraya Thai Road, Si Ayutthaya Roadm Ratchadamnoen Road, and finally Na Phra Lan Road, before entering The Grand Palace through the Wiset Chai Si Gate. Arriving at Phiman Rattaya Throne Hall at 5:04'pm, it was welcomed by a Royal delegation, led by Princess Ubolratana (Sirikit's eldest daughter).

Following the arrival of the Funeral Procession to The Grand Palace of Bangkok on Sunday, 26 October 2025, the private bathing rites for the Royal body of Her late Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother took place at Phimanrattaya Throne Hall, begining at 17:42'. The Royal Coffin of the late Queen was then moved to the Dusit Maha Phrasat Throne Hall at the same Palace and was placed at the five-levered pedestal "Suvarna Benjadol", to lay-in-state beneah the "Great Golden Urn (Phra Kot Thong Yai)". The latter, "carved from wood and covered in solid gold, decorated with diamond in the form of flowers and garlands", was smoothly installed beneath the nine-tiered Umbrella - an exceptional honor, before reserved only for fully-Crowned Kings - at 18:07'pm. A Gun salute was fired by the Royal Thai Army at Sanam Luang (the Grounds where The Royal Crematorium will be built) in 25 rounds, over 25 minutes; from the beginning of the bathing rite (5:42) to (6:07) the mounting of the Royal Urn The King and Queen laid their wreaths in front of the Great Royal Urn and prayed in front of it, before lighting candles to pay their respects to the late Queen Mother's personal buddha image, her portrait being installed next to the Royal Urn. Then, the first-day Buddhist Funeral Ceremony followed in the presence of Their Majesties and members of the Thai Royal Family; the first of the 100 daily services, including alms giving to the monks & chants of verses of Bodhisattva.

The Royal Household announced that mourners would be let to pay their respects to the late Queen Mother's portrait & sign a book of Condolences at Sahathai Samakhom Pavilion from 8:30am to 4pm daily, starting Monday, 27 October 2025. They were allowed into Dusit Maha Phrasat Throne Hall to pay their last respects to Queen Mother Sirikit from Sunday, 9 November 2025 from 9am to 9pm daily. A picture of The King & his three sisters kneeling in Vigil before The Queen Mother's Urn was also released from October 26. On October 29, The King & Queen of Bhutan became the first foreign Royalty to pay their respects to Queen Sirikit and attended a daily merit-making ceremony. Their Thai Majesties led ceremonies during the first week of Lying-in-State; and presided over the special rites for the 7th, 15th & 50th day from her passing (on October 30-31, November 7-8, & December 12-13, 2025, respectively). A final such merit making for the 100th day is planned for January 31-February 1, 2026. They will be followed by merit-making rites co-hosted by members of The Royal Family, The Privy Council, Cabinet representatives, government & private sector officials and the general public.

Royal Condolences were extended from around the world in late October (2025), accompanied by Special Tributes (1,000 buterlamps lighting by The Royal Family of Bhutan at the Grand Kuenrey of Tashichhodzong), signing books of Condolences at Thai Embassies & personal visits to pay respects at Dusit Maha Phrasat Throne Hall; by members of current & former ruling dynasties. Upon gradually resuming their Royal engagements, members of The Royal Family of Thailand attended exhibitions at Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles and Khon Performances in honour of the late Queen. In yet another spectacular tribute 11 pink-painted elephants of the Royal Elephant Kraal Village, Ayutthaya province, marched to the Grand Palace on November 27 & bowed in unison to the Queen who bred them. Meanwhile, preparations for The Royal Cremation of Her late Majesty is actively taking place by eight committees of The Thai Government's Ministries & Departments. On Thursday, November 6, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and (her niece) Dame Sirikitiya Jensen, launched the preparatory works of The Ministry of Culture's Fine Arts' Department, for the Royal Chariots and Carriages to be used to Transport the late Queen Sirikit's body from the Grand Palace to The Royal Crematorium in Sanam Luang. The latter is estimated to take 11 months to be built, thus 'The Mother of the (Thai) Nation' is expected to be cremated by approximately October 2026, ending The Royal Family's year-long mourning.
