YDP AGONG'S MOTHER TURNS 70 - Sunday, January 6, 2019.

Today YMM (/HRH) Tengku Anis Binti Almarhum Tengku Abdul Hamid, the former Raja Perempuan (Queen consort) of Malaysian state of Kelantan and mother to the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Federal Supreme King) of Malaysia, Sultan Muhammad V, marks her 70th birthday.

Born on January 6, 1949 at her Palm Manor family residence in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, she was related to the Royal House of Kelantan and that of Pattani. Her parents were Tengku Abdul Hamid Ibni Almarhum Tengku Muda and Tengku Azizah Binti Almarhum Tengku Sri Maharaja Tengku Hamzah. Tengku Hamzah, her maternal grandfather had been a Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of Kelantan. Anis received her primary & secondary education in english & malay schools, while religious scholars tutored her at home. On December 4, 1949, Tengku Anis was married to the Tengku Mahkota (=Crown Prince) of Kelantan, future Sultan Ismail Petra. The wedding took place at the palace, with the bridegroom being both 19 years old. Tengku Anis was granted the title of Tengku Ampuan Mahkota (spouce of the Heir) of Kelantan on January 1, 1969. A final marriage ceremony was held that March. The couple welcomed four children, three sons (Muhammad Faris Petra - later Sultan Muhammad V, Muhammad Fa'iz Petra, & Muhammad Fakhry Petra) and a daughter, Amalin A'Ishah Putri - the first woman from Kelantan to receive a University (master's) degree. From their daughter's marriage to a nephew of the Sultan of Brunei, they also have two granddaughters.

Tengku Anis was reportedly a strict mother, with sources telling her she asked the headmaster of her elder son's primary school to cane her firstborn if he won't follow the laws (and even presented him a cane). She became the Royal Consort of Kelantan after her husband's accession and coronation, in 1980. In this role she supported her husband in his social work and development projects across Kelantan. They were, reportedly, very approachable to the public and often visited ordinary people at their homes to inspect the living conditions.

She remained in that position until the Sultan became incapacitated to rule in 2010, following a serious stroke he suffered in 2009, and was controversially deposed and replaced by their first son. Anis supported her recovering husband and has spent a lot of time with him ever since then, but the same time has recognised her son as Sultan (and later as Yang di-Pertuan Agong) - though the former hasn't. She still remains active in public duties, having patroned various attractions, like the art gallery-museum of Pucuk Rebung, with exhibitions featuring the state's history. She has been also actively involved in official, state affairs. Tengku Anis was present at the send-off ceremony for Sultan Muhammad V to Kuala Lumpur (when he bagun his five-year term as YDP Agong) - he gently kissed his mother and shook her hand, before leaving for the airplane. While she was present too at an audience of former opposition politician Anwar Ibrahim and his family with the Regent of Kelantan (her second son, Muhammad Fa'iz Petra), rumours spread quickly that there was a planned marriage between Sultan Muhammad V & Anwar Ibrahim's daughter, something which Anwar's family denied.

Although currently Tengku Anis isn't always in the centre of spotlight, she can still be seen at public (and especially religious) events, with Kelantan paying her (and her husband) the utmost respects and a Special living Allowance being paid to them as it was decided by the State's Assembly.
